San Juan National Forest
The San Juan National Forest comes over one million acres 3,000 square miles. You’ll be able to tons of hiking here, in there officially designated wilderness areas. There’s Lizard Head Wilderness, South San Juan Wilderness, and Weminuche Wilderness. All part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, these allow you to safely explore the wilderness while still feel confident about preserving it. Theodore Roosevelt created the forest by proclamation on June 3, 1905. There are local ranger district offices in Bayfield, Dolores, and Pagosa Springs. President Barack Obama designated part of the forest as Chimney Rock National Monument by proclamation on September 21, 2012.Â
Chimney Rock National Monument
This monument is actually within the San Juan National Forest and is surrounded by the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. It’s a gorgeous natural landmark that stands 315 feet tall, and is a famous nesting spot for the beautiful Peregrine Falcon.
Mesa Verde National Park
This park not only has natural beauty, it has history. Mesa Verde National Park was created by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, so even its inception was historic. It’s the largest archeological preserve in the U.S. and here, you can find famous structures like the Cliff Palace, a large cliff dwelling with over 150 rooms. It’s supposed to date back more than 700 years, when it was home to about 125 people. Visit here for nature and history!
The Colorado Trail
Want exercise and nature? You’ve got it with the Colorado Trail. It spans 500 miles from Denver to Durango and has views that you thought existed only in books, from lakes and creeks to impressive mountain summits. You can hike, mountain bike, and horseback ride here. You can also volunteer to help keep the Colorado Trail how it is! The Volunteer Trail Crew maintains the quality of the trail every year and helps improve it.
